The story follows Helena Pelletier, a woman who was raised in the marshes of Michigan's Upper Peninsula by her father, known as the Marsh King. He kidnapped her mother and raised Helena in isolation, teaching her survival skills and indoctrinating her with his twisted views. Years later, Helena must confront her past and use her skills to track down her father, who has escaped from prison.
